Pia Mater is a series of digital paintings printed on silk that hang as membranes over identical digital still prints on canvas beneath them. “Pia mater, translated from Latin, means ‘tender mother,’ and describes the delicate protective membrane closest to and encasing the human brain. I think a lot about cognition, especially as human attention has been ruthlessly exploited and monetized. In the Pia Mater series, I am exploring the resilience and fragility of perception, and the urgency of protecting it, as a tender mother would. This series explores the perceptual veils that shield, occlude, and reflect what is robustly present beneath, highlighting the complexity of perception and cognition.
